The WanderSearch programme supported by Land Search and Rescue (LandSAR) with NZ Police, is for people living with conditions that impair the ability of the person to find their way home e.g. dementia, autism, memory impairment.
People at risk of going missing are issued with a small device that they keep with them at all times, or whenever they go out and about. They can then be found by Police and trained volunteers using specialized equipment if they go missing.

WanderSearch (also known as Wandatrak in some areas) provides individuals with a small radio frequency device that can be found by using specialized equipment (receiver units and aerials). Only Police, LandSAR volunteers and WanderSearch Group volunteers are trained in using the search equipment. If a person goes missing who has the device with them and the Police are called, they can be found much faster. The system is one of a number of technologies that supports the Safer Walking Framework in New Zealand as it applies to people with cognitive impairment who have a risk of going missing.
People who can benefit from having a device have a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, brain injury and Down Syndrome and may need assistance to find their way home. WanderSearch supports people who have a risk of going missing by providing a device that assists in locating that person if necessary.
People who use a WanderSearch device are found much faster compared to people without any sort of location device. For people who have frail health or unaware of environmental hazards the time taken to locate them can be critical.
If you are looking after a person who is regularly wandering from their place of residence or is known to wander off and become lost, WanderSearch will give you some peace of mind and reduce some of the stress that goes with caring for people at risk.
The only cost involved for those needing the pendants is $60 every six months ($10 per month) to cover the cost of changing the battery.
