The team, named after their dementia collection of resources at two libraries, consists of a group of about 20 or so from the Palmerston North City Libraries and City Council and friends.
On Sunday, 14th September, at 9am, they will be meeting at the carpark at the Ashhurst end of the Te Ahu a Turanga walkway and will walk about half of the 10.5km walkway beside the new Manawatu Taraua Highway to raise money for Alzheimers Manawatu as part of Move for Dementia. Anyone is welcome to join them.
The team are taking advantage of their library's makerspace area, Blueprint, to custom print purple shirts with Team Memory Matters on the back and a small design on the front with forget-me-nots and the Māori words He Taonga te Pūmahara (Memory Matters) surrounding them.
“Taking part in Move for Dementia is a great way for the team to raise awareness of dementia, celebrate and promote our Memory Matters collection, that has been going for a year now, and connect with others in the council and outside,” Palmerston North City Council City Library Team Leader Content Management Louise Stormont said.
The Memory Matters collection, that includes a range of items specially selected to help stimulate memories, increase connection and improve wellbeing, was developed in consultation with groups across the country, as well as local organisations like Alzheimers Manawatu for people with dementia, their caregivers and their whānau.
This includes books about dementia and books aimed at adults with varying levels of memory loss; jigsaw puzzles; music players; fidget widgets; games; activity boards; aquapaints and more. These collections are in the central library and Roslyn Library.
Also on offer (subject to availability) are a large print collection, visits to rest homes and groups tailored to peoples' different interests; tech experiences using robots, apps, and virtual reality; dementia-friendly book groups.
